my girls night and my grandma.

earlier tonight evie and i sat under the dim lighting of the dodo with 3 of my favorite girls in the world and had ourselves a little girls night. there were babies involved (3 of them!) so the mayhem was thick and the conversations were stalled, but still-a girls night was had!

i love me a good girls night (lets have one, yes?). girls nights are good for the soul. its nice to slap on some lipstick, spritz on some perfume (because friends appreciate that kind of stuff) and get away for an hour or two to discuss life and all its weirdness.

these friends of mine, the ones we dined with, have been my friends since back before the maturation program in elementary changed our lives forever. can you believe this!? pre-maturation program friends!!! in fact, i think i can remember talking to these exact friends (horrified, of course) in the bathroom after that dreaded program took place, and now here we are, all grown up, leading our own grown up lives. some of us have babies, some of us are married, some of us have rad careers and impressive college degrees and independence to boot. and we aren't kids anymore and we don't see each other nearly enough, but still, when i'm with them, it always feels like nothing has changed.

***

so tonight, after the dessert was devoured and the bill was paid, i strapped my baby in the car and turned on some music and drove us home from girls night under the warmth of the sunset. and as i drove, for whatever reason, i got to thinking about all the people in my life, and what they might be up to tonight.

i thought a lot about my friends, about my gjo studying his brains out at home, about my crazy siblings off making plans and families and lives for themselves, and then because i couldn't help it, i started to think about my pansy.

pansy is my grandma, but pansy isn't really her name. i mean, if you meet her in person, you should call her val or grandma moffitt, but as for me, i will call her pansy. pansy wears lipstick every day and she kisses me right on the lips every time she sees me, even if the lipstick is the brightest shade of pink. pansy writes me love letters and mails them to me in hand-painted envelopes covered in shaky, beautiful cursive. pansy reads my blog when she can remember how to find it and pansy drove 45 minutes in a snowstorm one afternoon to visit me in the hospital and rub my back with her arthritic fingers as i cried.

she is the person i call when i am hurting. she is the person who taught me to paint and and make pie crust and appreciate an afternoon at the opera club. there is no one in the world i love more than my grandma pansy.

lately my pansy has been sick. and the fact that she isn't doing well has made me think a lot about how much i love her and whether i am savoring these moments that surround me just the way that she would want me to. i think if pansy were feeling up for it, she would have loved a girls night tonight. she would have left 30 minutes early and been waiting sweetly to be seated when everyone else arrived. she would have worn great turquoise jewelry and pink lipstick and ordered something special off the menu.

i think she would have enjoyed every minute of her evening. she would have laughed and cried and told her friends she loved them and said a prayer of thanks as she raced the night sky home.

i think she would tell me to slow down a bit. to enjoy the sunset as it fades. to have myself a girls night and order more than one dessert at the end of the night, if i can't make up my mind.

that's what pansy would do.

those summer nights.

earlier this evening, i heard something walking around on my roof.
the wuss in me panicked slightly. a stalker? a serial killer? a neighborhood hooligan?!

it wasn't a hooligan.
it was my friend, mckenzie.

i was relieved to see her.
we laughed.

she was up there taking pictures of the summer night.
that sounded like a good idea to me, so i came inside and took this picture through my dirty window.

someday, when we don't live here any longer, i know that i will miss those windows and sitting on the lawn with mckenzie and her kids the very most.

my hopes are so high that your kiss might kill me!

so won't you kill me
so i die happy

my heart is yours to fill or burst
to break or bury
or wear as jewelry
whichever you prefer.

I've been listening to Dashboard Confessional all afternoon.
Yep. That's right. I'm admitting it.

Why, you ask? Because it reminds me of High School! It reminds me of my friends! It reminds me of drives up the canyon and meeting at the park and Wendy's runs late at night. It reminds me of football games and Prom and sleepovers at Holley's house. It reminds me of pool hopping and cards on the front lawn in bikinis. It reminds me of boys and good times and sneaking out the basement window (Sorry, Mom!). It reminds me of being young and stupid.

a few of my friendliest friends. some of these girls climbed out of those windows with me.
It brings back good memories, okay?! What songs do that for you?

dmb.

last night, dave matthews serenaded us with his mad guitar skills and vocals. i have loved dave matthews band for a long, long time (thanks to my brother, ryan) and we loved seeing him in concert. we also loved taking the burbanks with us and making fun of all the drunk idiots we were surrounded by. besides pregnant me being a wee bit paranoid about all the smoke coming from everyone's cigarettes (i spent a lot of time dodging the puffs and rocking out in the back with fresh air, don't worry) we had fun.

not as much fun as this lady, though. apparently this was the greatest day of her life.

sweet.

thanks for all the sympathy for my patheticness, friends. i am now happy to report that things are looking up! we got to tend those little lovers last night & they both decided to be perfect gems and go to sleep exactly when they were supposed to and be happy and sweet the entire night. we absolutely adore them.

and then, this morning, kenz & ry made us our favorite captain crunch french toast & anthropologie returned my dress without any tags or a receipt. and as if that wasn't enough, apple gave me a new ipod touch for mere pennies & the u took back my parking ticket!
can you believe it?!

i guess my luck is changing for the better.
have a fabulous saturday!

saw this picture in the midst of a crazy, stressful day & it made me smile, because i loved it so much. i got to spend all day last saturday with these gorgeous women and go out to dinner & a movie last night with some more of my favorite ladies. so grateful for life long friends, both old & new. and while we are on the topic of gorgeous women, why is it that pretty much every friend i have could be a super model? no fair.

blair weds.

ms. blair was married to her perfect match, nick, on friday. it was one of my favorite weddings i've ever been to and i'm so glad i got to be one of her bridesmaids. blair looked incredible and everyone was so relaxed and chill the entire day. one of the best parts was being with all of my friends and dancing the night away. i love my friends and we love to dance together. and just for the record, g knows that i am crazy, but i don't think he realized i was that crazy, because he looked a little mortified at times as he watched us get down from his spot against the wall. i can never resist shaking my booty in the middle of a circle when the opportunity presents itself and i think g would rather cut off his feet than do so.

all in all, a great wedding and a gorgeous bride. this woman has been one of my best friends since highschool and i am so grateful for her. i love you, boo.

flirty.

this weekend was the much anticipated birthday bash for all of our 30 year old husbands. i can't believe g is 30. judging by his behavior (and his behavior with certain friends) sometimes i swear he's still 12, but then 9pm rolls around and i find him dead asleep in the office and suddenly he is oh so 30 again.
anyways, 30. we celebrated with an awesome cake & a hilarious slide show. and there may or may not have been a few too many pictures of my husband's bare bum involved, but that's another story for another time.

these boys are pretty hilarious together and i'm glad they're still close. even more so, i'm glad they all married lovely women that i now have the pleasure of calling my friends. thanks to all of you ladies for helping throw this bash together. can we do it more often, please?

grateful.

after the piling on of several stresses (including one professor claiming to have never received a paper i wrote and another misplacing an entire project) last night i found myself in the midst of a little meltdown. eventually, i went to bed feeling very sorry for myself and woke up with puffy eyes, a bad migraine and an even worse attitude. tonight, however, i am going to bed with a grateful heart.

thank you to several of my friends & family members who managed to somehow just know that i needed a phone call, text or card. not to mention the new fall arrangement adorning my dining room table. today, i have been truly amazed by these random acts of kindness and can only hope to be that kind of friend in return. you may not have known why i needed it, but you can't know how much it meant to me. so thank you, ladies (you know who you are).

now, i'm off to the land of lovers...see you soon!
*and yes, the bad news came after i wrote my previous "life is good" post. figures.

i love these people.

welcome to the world, mr. briggs.
you are the cutest little man we've ever met
and we love you so much already.

{briggs was born on 9.27, so i've been waiting to post this darling pic for a while,
but of course, i wanted to wait until his mommy had the honors of introducing him first.}

shower the people you love with love.

So...

My best friend is having a baby.

This month. And have you ever in your life seen a more gorgeous pregnant woman?! I am so excited for her, and I still just can't even believe it. My best friend is having a baby. This woman has been my partner-in-crime, advice giver, favorite person and best friend for the past 14 years and now she is going to be a mother. I can't even believe how lucky that little man is to have her for a Mom. Holls, you are going to be incredible.

Here are a few pics from the shower I threw for her last week. It went off without a hitch, thanks to all my ladies who brought food & helped plan the games (thank you!) And I was too busy hosting to remember my camera, so I stole these pics from Boo's facebook page. Alas, facebook does serve a purpose.

I love your face, Holley McCail.
